On the third cast, she grabbed it, and a 50-minute battle ensued. She just about ran my line out twice. I was glad I had a reel with a large capacity spool. She wasn't running real fast, but she was running strong. Landing the fish was only half of the ordeal. Without knowing I was in possession of a new WV State record, I had no intentions of keeping the fish. I spent nearly an hour and a half trying to revive the animal.
I didn't want to keep her, because she was such a magnificent animal. When efforts to release the fish failed, I took it to Jerry's Sporting Goods to have it measured and weighed. It was then that they realized that the fish had beaten the record for musky length. So to make sure I had to put the fish over night on ice in the bathtub until the next morning to have it measured and weighed by the WV Wildlife Center (biologist Kevin Yokum), and when he said "Gentlemen we have a new record", it was hard to believe. A fish like this is of a lifetime.
